Greek Shield isopods are one of the most striking and unique species in the hobby, known for their flattened body shape, dramatic white “skirt,” and shield-like appearance. Despite their exotic look, they are fairly hardy once established and make an excellent display species for collectors.
Care Snapshot:
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Temperature: 72–80°F (22–27°C)
- Humidity: Moderate to high with strong ventilation
- Enclosure: Wide, well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of bark hides and leaf litter
- Bioactive Role: Primarily display species; moderate clean-up crew
Habitat & Setup:
Greek Shields prefer a balanced enclosure with both moist and dry areas. They thrive in setups with excellent airflow, as stagnant humidity can stress the colony. Provide deep substrate, cork bark hides, hardwood leaf litter, and decaying wood for grazing and shelter.
A moisture gradient is important:
- One side lightly moist with sphagnum moss
- One side allowed to dry out more between misting
Feeding:
Offer a varied diet including:
- High-quality isopod food
- Fish or shrimp pellets
- Dried leaves and decaying hardwood
- Vegetables such as squash, carrot, and sweet potato
Always provide a calcium source such as:
- Cuttlebone
- Crushed oyster shell
- Cleaned and baked eggshell
Behavior & Breeding:
Greek Shields are calm, slow-moving isopods that spend much of their time tucked beneath bark or leaf litter. Their flat body shape allows them to squeeze tightly against surfaces, creating their distinctive shield-like look.
They reproduce steadily once established but are not considered a fast-producing species. Stable conditions and good airflow are key to long-term success.
Why Keep Greek Shields?
- Stunning black-and-white contrast
- Unique flat “shield” body shape
- Excellent collector/display species
