Red Panda isopods are a rare and eye-catching Cubaris species known for their rich reddish-orange coloration and panda-like contrast patterning. Like many Cubaris species, they are slower growing, reproduce gradually, and prefer stable environmental conditions, making them best suited for intermediate to advanced keepers.
Care Snapshot:
Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–25°C)
Humidity: High and stable with a strong moisture gradient
Enclosure: Well-ventilated enclosure with deep substrate, moss, cork bark, leaf litter, and humid retreats
Bioactive Role: Primarily display; moderate clean-up crew
Feeding:
Offer a varied diet including high-quality isopod food, fish or shrimp pellets, dried minnows or protein treats in moderation, and vegetables such as squash, carrot, sweet potato, and zucchini. Provide abundant decaying hardwood leaves and rotting wood as staple food sources. Always include a constant calcium source such as cuttlebone or cleaned and baked eggshell.
Habitat Notes:
Red Panda isopods thrive in stable, humid setups with plenty of hiding spaces. Maintain a moisture gradient by keeping one side consistently damp with sphagnum moss while allowing the opposite side to remain slightly drier. Good airflow is important to prevent stagnant conditions while maintaining humidity. Cork bark, hardwood chunks, and thick leaf litter help them feel secure and encourage natural behaviors.
Breeding:
Red Panda isopods reproduce slowly compared to beginner species like Dairy Cows or Powder Blues. Once established, healthy colonies will steadily produce mancae under stable conditions. Avoid excessive disturbance and maintain consistent humidity and temperature for best breeding success.
